Location: Burnaby, BC

The position reports directly to the CFO and will entail supervision/leadership role of junior networking and help desk staff members. This is a critical role that is responsible for a variety of system related tasks. Typically the best network managers are generalist, the can wire and repair cables, install new software, patch software, train users, maintain hardware, software, and other system related components.  They will also be aware of general business requirements, perform planning and budgeting of priorities for multiple tasks and schedule and co-ordinate services with users, and their staff.

 

The Network Manager will build servers and jointly configure applications according to specifications provided by the IT Manager, implement and maintain the application in a production environment.

 

 Primary Responsibilites 

Help desk

-         Will be responsible for all first level Help Desk call, in assigning to appropriate resource, and in managing the daily workload.  Devise a user-facing tracking system for projects vs. repair/assistance.

-         Prioritize daily schedules to ensure higher priority items are dealt with in a timely fashion without compromising our service to user on high level Help Desk Calls.

 

Servers

-         Organize Server Technology appropriately to make better use of resources. Centralizing technologies to appropriate servers to better utilize technologies and servers.  Implement warm back up for Syteline; configure and install POS/LBOSS polling, application and database servers and Macintosh test environment with Tiger OS.  Investigate and implement virtual server technology to reduce power requirements for servers

-         Analyzing, Detecting and Resolving all Server Based Technologies, such as Exchange, Operating Systems, Virus Protection, Backup, and Spam Intrusion.

-         Responsible for organizing and maintaining server based system and user files in an orderly manner.

 

Operating systems and Network

-         Responsible for all Desktop O/S Technologies and their maintenance by subscribing to and adhering to a standard methodology of system maintenance. Tools such as SMS or other management tools should be incorporated to facilitate this process.

-         Responsible for, adopting appropriate security policies and ensure the proper processes are in place to manage.

-         Responsible for the security of Network and Related Infrastructures by ensuring proper network security is implemented, which includes User Account Security, Managing Outside Access to System Resources, Intrusion Prevention, and Virus Protection, co-ordinate with IT Manager

-         Responsible for ensuring appropriate data backups are performed on all mission critical system files, such as database dumps, server registries and components. Extends to all Server based files, but also in the reliability of user based desktop files and applications, and internal SQL Server and Progress Databases to ensure backups are performed of all critical data, and co-ordinate processes with IT Manager

-         Analyzing, Detecting and Resolving all Network Related Issues

-         Maintain and troubleshoot POS System and Architecture

-         Responsible for updating and reviewing cabling and maintaining Network Diagrams of all Systems at the Stores, Head Office, Warehouse and remote locations.

-         Develop change process for assuming the Progress (Syteline) database maintenance routines to ensure that the environment is stable and functional with the IT Manager.

-         Dealing with placing orders and getting quotes in a timely fashion for all network, retail and communications equipment.  Evaluate workflow and make recommendations on IT support vs. user-controlled functions for retail.

-         Will be responsible for collecting the appropriate log data in a centralized fashion to ensure appropriate error reporting and preventative system maintenance.

-         Ensuring all old files are archived and cleaned off system.

-         Cleaning up the Server Room, Organizing the Lab and IT Mezzanine Area

-         Writing User Login Scripts

-         Writing System Maintenance, Automation, and Error Reporting Scripts.

-         Be able to use tools such as SMS, Visual Source Safe, Sonic View reporting and other Systems Management Tools.

-         Builds redundancy and failsafe processes in all systems.

 

Communications

-         Manage and oversee the maintenance of all system networking devices such as our ADSL high speed modems, Sonic Firewall, including all store related networking devices. Manage and maintain systems relating to the ongoing documentation and dumping of firewall information, reviewing logs to ensure the integrity and health of our networking systems.  Maintaining and Configuring the Failover SonicWall Fire Wall Appliance.

-         Implement new changes to networking infrastructure to support ongoing application development, this extends to our Wireless VIVATO Network for our Warehousing and other systems, co-ordinating together with IT Manager

-         Dealing with third party telecommunications vendors on issues relating to connectivity, enforecement of SLA.

-         Maintain/enhance a network communications system for all operations of remote offices.

-         Responsible for Internal and External Telephone Systems and the issues related to such.

 

Administration and supervision

-         Will work with the IT Manager in planning network resources for capacity planning and system deployment of new technologies.

-         Supervise and train all IT staff members in network matters and inform and train user community, co-ordinate with IT Manager.  Evaluate all IT staff member skill sets and make recommendations suited to Purdy’s needs.

-         Oversee development of a technology plan over the next five years

-         Works with the IT Manager in planning and implementing disaster recovery systems and process.

-         Documents all appropriate processes, access information, network infrastructure, help desks, and other related documentation as required.

-         Administer vendor relationships and payments in a timely fashion.

 Primary Skills Sets Required 

-         Must be MCSE Certified with the latest Windows 2003 Server Technologies

-         Certified in SQL Server or other related database technologies

-         Understanding of ETL and other Service Related Models

-         Understanding of Project Management and Systems Development Methodologies

-         Certified in at least one major network infrastructure (CISCO, SONIC WALL, VIVATO, etc)

-         Certification in Exchange and/or other Mail Related Systems

-         8-10 years solid networking, and systems architecture experience with a network of at least 50 users.

-         Have a good working knowledge of how spam/viruses/network hi-jacking work.

-         Be able to quickly understand and analyze problems in order to resolve problems.

-         Able to adapt to new technologies and utilized them in current environments.

-         Be a Team Player

-         Strong inter-personal and communications skills.

-         Ability to write proposal, or other systems documentation using standard processes and methodologies.

-         Be Solutions Oriented not Problem Oriented

-         Be able to effectively deal with outside technology Vendors and Contractors

-         Have strong work habits, that bring dedication and commitment to the position.

-         Have solid understanding of the Microsoft Foundation of Technologies, such Operating Systems, and Enterprise Based Solutions such as Exchange and Share Point Services, SQL Server, SMS and other related technologies.

-         Understands IITL and other Metrics or Performance Based Processes in order to apply them in everyday functions.

-         Ability to write shell/perl, or other windows scripting languages.

 

 

 Key Metrics To Performance 

The key metrics to the incumbent performance will be :

 

  1. Network reliability maintained at the 95% level
  2. Phone System maintained and kept up at the 99.9% level
  3. Successful in dealing with ongoing mail related spam and virus issues.
  4. Successful in controlling and intervening in the spread of viruses to our network
  5. Keeping all Network and System related documentation up-to-date and accurate.
  6. Implementing tighter controls on security, spam, and virus related issues.
  7. Keep system problems down to a minimum and ensure the timely resolution of all system and user related problems.
  8. End User satisfaction, better network interfaces, easier ways to manage files and data.
