| Kal Tire is Canada’s largest independently owned tire dealer servicing the commercial and consumer markets throughout Canada. The company is headquartered in Vernon, BC and has over 200 corporate owned and associate-dealer stores, 14 retread plants, 4 warehouses, and more than 3,000 employees.We are looking for a bright and innovative individual to join our senior technical team in the Information Services department. This individual will work in a team that manages the operation of the UNIX environment and ensures that proper infrastructure and operating processes are in place to meet the requirements of running the business and works closely with the IS support and other operations teams. Kal Tire has approximately 220 Sun Solaris and 12 Linux servers, Hitachi SAN and ATL tape backup to support its core business.
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
• Conducts feasibility studies for new or existing infrastructure enhancements by performing tasks such as determining user department requirements, examining and identifying problems with existing systems and recommending modifications.
• Performs a variety of duties related to server monitoring and capacity management and ensures best practices for system security are being maintained.
• Provides Tier 3 technical troubleshooting and support for a variety of environments including Sun Solaris and Linux server infrastructure and performs tasks such as scheduled changes, tuning and maintenance, analyzing and diagnosing problems and formulating solutions.
• Ensures creation and tracking of documentation for technical procedures and standard processes such as server build documents, detailed procedures for disaster recovery scenarios and other operations guides.
• Mentors and provides knowledge transfer to co-workers as appropriate
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Technical leadership for projects; including participating in research, requirements definition and execution
• Designs server and application system solutions
• Lead the implementation of systems
• Defines service level and operational monitoring requirements and implements solutions
• Provides Tier 3 technical support
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
• Post-secondary degree/diploma in computer engineering or computer science or equivalent experience in Unix/Linux system administration
• Sun Solaris and/or Linux certification (e.g. SCSA)
• 3-5 years of progressive experience in retail IS
• 5-7 years of experience in operating and managing similar technologies as used in Kal Tire
• Membership in appropriate professional organization
• Project Management certification or experience
WORKING CONDITIONS AND ENVIRONMENT
• Occasional travel to Kal Tire locations and Q9 data center in Calgary as projects necessitate
• On-call support as required
• BC driver’s license and vehicle required
• Extra hours based on Project and/or operational needs
